From Our Founders
Dear Friends,

We founded the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF) in honor of our mother, Estée Lauder, because we saw firsthand the urgent need for treatments. This is a disease that affects not only the patient, but entire families – millions of them around the globe. And we are making remarkable headway. The level of progress we have seen in 2024 is truly unprecedented, and it is an honor to lead an organization that is transforming the landscape and bringing hope to those in need.

For the first time in history, we have multiple effective drugs available to help Alzheimer’s patients. And the ADDF continues to drive this momentum forward; advancing novel therapeutics, better ways to diagnose the disease, and prevention methods; thanks in large part to the leadership of our brilliant Co-Founder and Chief Science Officer, Dr. Howard Fillit, and the many innovative scientists we support.

We were thrilled to honor the impact of several of these scientists in Stockholm during a special celebration for the tenth anniversary of the ADDF’s Melvin R. Goodes Prize, which each year recognizes a pioneering researcher who has made an exceptional impact on the Alzheimer's field. The city’s tradition of recognizing brilliance through the Nobel Prize made it the perfect place to celebrate the Goodes Prize as it marked a decade of accelerating innovation, enabling breakthroughs, and shaping Alzheimer's science.

From the beginning, the ADDF’s unique structure has positioned us to propel the science towards the future of treatment. Our venture philanthropy model allows us to ensure each of our successes builds upon the others, with any returns re-invested into new ideas that will lead to the next breakthrough. And our board, which we expanded over the past year, convenes key thought leaders from industry, academia, business, and philanthropy who provide critical insights and expertise to help us conquer this disease.

It is an honor to work with them, as well as with our many dedicated partners, including Bill Gates, the Dolby family, the Foundation for a Better World, and the Shanahan Family Foundation. And of course, we could not fulfill our mission without our incredible donors.

We are confident that, together, we will soon create a world where no family has to worry about Alzheimer's.

Dear Friends,

It has been another incredible year for the Alzheimer’s field, with the Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF) at the helm, shaping and leading the science.

With the help of our donors, partners, and funded researchers, we are revolutionizing treatment and driving the field toward the ultimate goal of combination therapies and precision medicine, the same approach that has proven successful for cancer. And we could not be prouder of the progress being made.

This has been a landmark year for diagnostics, led by ADDF-funded companies – so much so that we have called it “the year of the blood test.” C2N Diagnostics, ALZpath, and Fujirebio all announced new data and partnerships, moving us closer to the day when blood tests could replace PET scans and CSF tests as a more accessible first line of defense in diagnosis than ever before.

We have also seen great strides in drug development with another anti-amyloid therapy, Kisunla, approved. This adds to the first class of Alzheimer’s drugs, for which the ADDF-funded Amyvid PET scan paved the way. And we have continued to advance the next generation of treatments informed by the biology of aging, even convening an advisory board of experts to provide critical guidance for future clinical trials focused on combination therapies.

The ADDF’s renowned worldwide network of scientists allows us to build on our momentum year after year and speed effective treatments toward the patients who need them. We are honored to play a leading role in facilitating global collaboration between the brightest minds in the Alzheimer’s field. This September, we had the privilege of being joined by Her Majesty Queen Silvia of Sweden and U.S. Ambassador to Sweden Erik Ramanathan as we convened our esteemed international group of Goodes Prize winners in Stockholm.

With the continued growth and flourishing of our partnerships, the leadership of our visionary co-founders Leonard A. and Ronald S. Lauder, and the dedication of all our supporters, we will continue to build upon this year’s breakthroughs and advance the science until we have stopped this disease in its tracks.

Shaping the
Next Generation of

Therapeutics

At the ADDF, we are dedicated to driving the science toward combination therapies and precision medicine, which will be key to stopping Alzheimer's in its tracks. We have built a legacy as leaders in therapeutic innovation over the past 26 years, pioneering a biology of aging approach which now informs nearly 75% of drugs in development. And we will continue to push the field forward until we have effective treatments for all of the patients and families who need them.

Leading Development
of Cutting-Edge

Diagnostics

2024 has been a year of breakthroughs for Alzheimer’s blood tests, with ADDF-funded companies leading the charge. Our Diagnostics Accelerator initiative, founded in partnership with Bill Gates, has been at the forefront of biomarker development since its inception. As the tools funded through this program advance, they are revolutionizing the way we diagnose and treat Alzheimer’s disease. Soon, we will have eye scans and digital tools to use alongside these blood tests, further transforming the course of this disease.

Paving the Way
for Precision

Prevention

Our ultimate goal is not only to treat Alzheimer’s, but to prevent it before it begins. The ADDF is forging the path for a precision prevention approach that will look at therapeutic and lifestyle interventions in tandem, tailoring them for individual patients. We have partnered with global leaders in the prevention space to ensure we are at the cutting-edge of developing solutions. And through our Cognitive Vitality website, we continue to provide our audiences with the latest recommendations on preserving brain health.

Honoring the Impact of the Goodes Prize

We were thrilled to bring together our friends and supporters, along with key scientific, government, and industry leaders for a special three-day celebration honoring the 10th anniversary of the Melvin R. Goodes Prize. Each year, this prize recognizes a trailblazing scientist who has helped to revolutionize the Alzheimer's field, so it was only fitting to hold our celebration in Stockholm, Sweden, a city with deep scientific roots and the home of the Nobel Prize. The 2024 prize was presented to Dr. Henrik Zetterberg, a world leader in Alzheimer’s biomarkers.

The Goodes Prize exemplifies the global collaboration fostered by the ADDF as we shape and lead the science toward the ultimate goal of combination therapies and precision medicine. It was an honor to be joined by both Her Majesty Queen Silvia of Sweden and U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom of Sweden Erik Ramanathan, who declared the Goodes Prize "the Nobel Prize of Alzheimer's research."

We are grateful to have been able to honor the legacy of Mel Goodes, the visionary philanthropist and pharmaceutical executive for whom the prize was named, in the presence of his wife Nancy before his passing just three weeks after the event. Nancy and Mel’s combined vision and efforts in establishing the Goodes Prize have made a profound impact on the entire Alzheimer's field and Mel’s legacy will live on through the breakthroughs made by the pioneering recipients of this award.

Thought Leadership

At the ADDF, we are honored to play a leading role in conferences and summits across the U.S. and abroad. We use our role to foster global collaboration, shape agendas to ensure resources are funneled in the right directions, and drive progress in critical therapeutic, diagnostic, and prevention research. Notably, our co-founder Ronald S. Lauder was joined by Michael J. Fox for the inaugural fireside chat at this year’s International Conference on Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Diseases (AD/PD), exploring the significant role of philanthropy in driving Alzheimer’s research and innovation.

We also act as conveners of leading voices in the field, both through our signature event panels and our Tomorrow’s Breakthroughs Today Scientific Symposium Series, founded in partnership with Heidi and Tom McWilliams, which brings together world-class scientists each year to discuss the path toward new treatments. In 2024, we also expanded our board, adding further experts from industry, academia, business, and philanthropy to provide critical insights and expertise that uniquely position us to tackle Alzheimer’s.
